Learn how to create a sweet apple tree multi-modal craft using everyday items. This apple tree craft is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers!
Apple Picking
Are you looking for a sweet fall-themed craft to occupy your toddler or preschooler? You’ve come to the right place. Here is a great apple tree craft to do after your trip to your local orchard.
Fall is coming and one of our favorite fall activities is going apple picking. There is nothing like freshly picked apples to munch on, beautiful sweater weather and supporting your local farmers.
My childhood home was located right beside an apple orchard and a lot of my cherished childhood memories involve apples. The orchard was our own personal playground.
Because of this, I love apple picking and we have taken H to a local orchard since she was born. We have a lovely organic orchard nearby which has a playground, cider press and even pigs! We also love to eat all kinds of apples, but best of all is an apple freshly picked off a branch!
Apple Activities
There are so many different activities you can do surrounding an apple theme. It’s a quintessential fall theme, perfect for preschool, kindergarten, or in your own home.
This year, we’ll do some baking, make our own applesauce and do lots of apple pie imaginative play with this play dough invitation! And of course, we’ll be reading plenty of apple-themed books (you can see our favorites here).
Apple Tree Craft
H loved this craft, especially adding the paint for the tree leaves and of course, the apples.
I loved that H was practicing her fine motor skills with scissor snips for the grass!
Apple Tree Craft Materials
- loofah
- blue paper
- 2 inch wide strip of green paper
- 1 inch wide strip of brown paper
- green and red paint
- scissors
- glue
Apple Tree Craft Instructions
Have your toddler snip the green strip of paper to make grass (this is a great introduction to using scissors!).
Glue the grass on the blue paper.
Glue the brown tree trunk behind the glass.
Here’s the fun part: dip the loofah into the green paint and dab on the paper to make the leaves of the tree.
Let dry.
Have your little one use their finger to make the apples in the tree (you can also add some on the ground).
Extension Activity: Orchard Field Trip
If you haven’t already gone apple picking, this would be a great activity to do with your kids.
While at the orchard, there is lots of learning to incorporate into your field trip.
Try:
- Expanding Vocabulary: point out technical words related to apples or farming.
- Numeracy: count the apples as you pick them (one-to-one correspondence) or estimate how many apples are in your basket, then count to see if your estimation is correct.
- STEM skills: dissect an apple and study its parts.
Book Recommendation
If you’re doing this apple tree craft, I wholeheartedly recommend reading The Apple Pie Tree. It’s a beautiful classic that has gorgeous illustrations! You’ll be itching to bake your own apple pie by the end of the book!
