Are you looking for a fun art project you can do outside or inside? This ice painting activity is a great summertime art project!
One of my favorite things about summer is that I can bring my kids–and their mess–outside!
My kids love to paint, but like most children, it creates significant mess. I usually end up cleaning for longer than they play!
That’s why I love taking painting outside. Using any canvas is great, but painting ice is a really fun way to switch up our painting activity. Plus, there’s not 100 ‘works of art’ we just have to save once painting’s done. The canvass will simply melt away!
You may have seen ideas about painting ice cubes, or a giant block of ice. This is fun for little ones, but to really amp up the excitement, I like to freeze water in some of my silicone baking sets. Simply add water, stick in the freezer and let your kids go to town.
You can also easily do this activity inside, by putting the ice in a dish or pan.

Ice Painting

Without further ado, here are the materials and instructions for ice painting.
Materials for Ice Painting
- silicon mold (anything you have will do, but here’s a super cute one similar to what I used)
- paint
- paintbrush
- dish/pan (optional)
- water
Instructions for Ice Painting
- pour water into the container of your choosing. This could be a bowl, pan or silicone baking mold.
- Freeze for a few hours or overnight.
- Pop your ‘ice canvass’ out of the mold.
- Provide your child paint, a paintbrush and the ice and let them paint away!
